AEC Reflection Week 4

What are Singaporean’s concern? What are our migrants’ concerns? Can there be a happy marriage between these concerns?

I feel that the key method to ensure happiness between Singaporeans and migrants is empathy.

During the Population White paper, the government wanted to increase the population of Singapore by bringing in more foreigners, I suppose Singaporeans felt extremely angry as they were afraid that they will become the minority in their own country and national identity will be loss. I personally feel that while economic growth is very important, the government shouldn’t sacrifice the citizens’ happiness.

I think what most Singaporeans feel is that when foreigners enter Singapore,  they take away job opportunities and overcrowd the country. I feel like we need to empathise with the foreign workers more, some of them do jobs that Singaporeans would not do, such as construction workers, toilet cleaners etc. And also, most of these foreign labour come from not very well off country, i feel like we should empathise with their situation, after all, we are all just trying to make a living to support our families.

I often think, what if i was a migrant? How would I feel if the locals were not that welcoming? If you think about it, we are all foreigners, our ancestry goes a long way back and you could be from anywhere! Thus i feel that Singaporeans should be more welcoming of foreign workers. However, with that being said, Singapore is a small country and I personally feel that the government shouldn’t bring in too many foreign workers, we might slowly lose our national identity this way. Why not create more incentives to encourage more couples to give birth?

All in all, I feel like I’m not knowledgable enough yet to talk about social politics but I strongly feel that we should always empathise and be kind to one another regardless of where you come from to bring about a peaceful and harmonious world.
